| The Advent of Digital Multimedia : there has been massive demand for multimedia
not only in our living rooms but also in mobile environments. Also demand for
higher resolution such as HD has been ubiquitous. To accommodate the massive demand
for digital multimedia, many video standards have been proposed, standardized,
and selected by multimedia industry. To cover colorful demands in those complex
digital multimedia markets backed by many video standard, it is a must to have
multi-standard video codec IP that should consume ultra-low power and decent flexibility.
Our Video Codec Design Philosophy : to answer those multimedia market
requests such as multi-standard support, ultra-low power, and decent flexibility,
our video codec design philosophy has unique advantages compared to other approaches
as illustrated in the table below. Compared to purely programmable core-based
design or core-based hybrid design, our design strategy can achieve ultra-low
power while we can provide decent flexibility compared to classical and conventional
codec-based monolithic design approach. Simply speaking, Chips&Media? IP
has the optimized SW/HW partition strategy to accommodate colorful demands for
complex multimedia markets.
Technical Achievements based on Our Design Philosophy : there are many
technical achievements based on our design philology as listed below.
- Cost-competitive design: all of Chips&Media IP? are cost-competitively
designed. For example, our MPEG-2 HD decoder IP only needs 160K gate, which
is usually about half of typical MPEG-2 HD decoder gate counts.
- Ultra-low power design: on the top of our small gate count, our IP requires
enormously low clock frequency for ultra-low power. For example, our H.264
decoder only needs 15Mhz clock for CIF at 30 frame per second.
- Full line-up of video IP coverage: Chips&Media is one of rare IP providers
who can cover full line-up of video IP starting from CIF to HD, and MPEG-2
to H.264 and VC-1.
- The world-first full HW full-duplex multi-codec IP: Chips&Media proudly
launched our CodaDX6 IP that can handle MPEG-4, H.263, and H.264 decoding
and encoding up to D1 resolution at 30 frame per second. It is full-duplex
codec IP so that both encoding and decoding can be executed simultaneously.
- Fully independent Video IP: many video IP actually needs many horse power
from host CPU, which erodes the CPU horse power that should be used other
application. Unlike those free-riding video IP, Chips&Media video IP only
needs less than 1MIPS from the host CPU at any worst case so that virtually
all CPU horse power can be used for any other general tasks.
